Phonex Corporation NeverWire Home Network Device Enters European Market

-NeverWire is the first HomePlug standard product to achieve compliance with European CE-

MIDVALE, Utah October 01, 2002 – Phonex Corporation TM Corporation (www.phonex.com), a world leader in Power Line Carrier (PLC) voice and data communication devices, today announced that the company's new NeverWire 14 QX-201 has received certification for sale in the European market.

The NeverWire device, which launched in the U.S. market in June 2002, is a HomePlug 1.0-compliant device that uses "powerline carrier" technology to make use of the unused bandwidth in standard electrical wiring. With the NeverWire 14, business or home users with multiple computers can use their existing power lines to create an instant 14MB Ethernet network that allows them to share high-speed internet access, share peripheral devices such as printers, and play interactive network and Internet games.

Today's announcement makes NeverWire 14 the first U.S. powerline device to achieve European compliance and to enter the European market. NeverWire's certification is applicable through all countries within the European Union (previously known as the European Community). Fifteen countries are members of the European Union, and some 370 million people share the common institutions and policies. The EU member countries are as follows:

  • Austria
  • Belgium
  • Denmark
  • Finland
  • France
  • Germany
  • Greece
  • Ireland
  • Italy
  • Luxembourg
  • The Netherlands
  • Portugal
  • Spain
  • Sweden
  • United Kingdom

European customers in these countries can now purchase the NeverWire through www.phonex.com or via Phonex' growing retail channel worldwide.

"Phonex has been a global company from the very beginning," said Phonex chief executive officer, John Knab. "Our first 12 years of experience has firmly established Phonex as a global product company in the phoneline technology space. Now, with the launch of NeverWire, we are fully demonstrating our commitment to the global market. We are pleased to be the first company in the world to introduce a HomePlug standard product into the European CE marketplace."

Knab noted that the NeverWire is the first of a number of products Phonex intends to launch in the international market in the fourth quarter of 2002 and beyond. Early market response to Phonex technology has indicated a great demand for the solutions the Phonex product family can address.

In the U.S., the NeverWire product has achieved immediate acceptance. In its first weeks of distribution, market response has been tremendous. The product has also been lauded in numerous key national publications and programs including NY Times, CNN, and USA Today.

The NeverWire 14 costs just US$129 per node and is available now. Each NeverWire device consists of a modem-sized box with two connectors—a power plug and an RJ-45 Ethernet jack. By plugging a NeverWire 14 into the wall, then plugging the RJ-45 jack into your computer or hub, users can instantly tap into a 14MB Ethernet network. There are no software drivers involved. The resulting network will support both Macintosh and Windows PCs.

One of the most popular uses of the NeverWire 14 device is the ability to connect a computer to a cable or DSL modem in another location of the house. This is a simple process that is made possible through a minor configuration to the PC. The NeverWire 14 is also able to support laptop computers through the laptop's Ethernet network interface card.

Consumers can use as many as 16 NeverWire units per powerline network. Each NeverWire 14 unit is capable of handling an unlimited number of computers and other devices such as computers, modems and printers.

The NeverWire 14 is available from Phonex and from selected retail dealers in the U.S. and worldwide. For ordering information or for a list of local retail sources, customers can contact the company at 801-566-0100, or visit the company's web site at www.phonex.com.
