Salt Lake City, UT - 06.05.2001 - Newly released installation figures for Phonex
Broadband show that a new Phonex Power Line Carrier (PLC) communication node is installed on the home powerline
somewhere in the world an average of every 15 seconds. "The numbers are beginning to paint a very real picture about
the powerline as a viable communication medium," said John Knab, president and CEO of Utah-based Phonex Corporation.
"Many skeptics are still vacillating about the reality of powerline communication, but volume installations of the
Phonex Wireless Modem and Phone Jack systems clearly indicate that not only are there proven home powerline products
on the market today, but there are millions of them."
While most companies playing within the powerline arena are still working to develop chipsets, Phonex Corporation has
been shipping narrowband products that transmit voice and data over 110v electrical wiring for the past 12 years. It
now has close to 7.1 million nodes installed worldwide. "The powerline industry is still viewed by many as an evolving
technology area," said Knab. "What some don’t realize is that there’s more than just chipsets being shipped to market.
Phonex narrow band products, which offer a reliable way to transmit voice and data signals from any electrical outlet
in the home, have been used by consumers for over a decade."
The proliferation of applications requiring connection to a telephone outlet has fueled installations of Wireless Modem
and Phone Jack systems. The products are being used in a variety of ways to rapidly deploy the latest home technologies
that require a simple method of installation, including PC modems connections to the Internet, interactive TV and
set-top box applications for cable and satellite, gaming consoles, stereo speakers, and personal digital recorders.
Phonex currently holds a patent portfolio that includes 93 U.S. and international patent actions for its PLC
communication technology. It has recently been awarded a new U.S. patent for its Wireless Modem Jack technology,
patent number 6,107,912, and has two other patents pending for technology associated with wireless and PLC broadband
and narrow band communications. "Given our large patent portfolio, we carefully watch any product announcements made
by other powerline players," said Knab. "However, along with our own achievements on the powerline, Phonex expects
dozens of other companies to enjoy robust success in both the chip development and consumer product arenas."
The long-term success of the narrowband Phonex technology has now set the stage for the upcoming release of the
company’s ultra high-speed 14 Mbps powerline solutions. "Those following the powerline industry should watch for
a major announcement in the next few weeks about the availability of the new Phonex NeverWire 14 product, which will
take data rates to the highest in the world over the home powerline," said Knab. Phonex also plans to make formal
announcements in the near future about technology that transmits high quality audio signals over home powerlines.
