Midvale, UT - 08.29.2000 - Utah Governor Michael O. Leavitt, as part of the state of
Utah's efforts to investigate companies which are having significant influence on high technology development throughout
Utah and the world, recently paid a visit to Phonex Corporation. Gov. Leavitt's tour of Phonex was one of only
two such visits paid to Utah corporations which the Governor and the Utah Department of Community & Economic Development
have identified as prime examples of "home-grown" technology companies.
Gov. Leavitt's visit to Phonex was held in conjunction with the Utah Silicon Valley Alliance which the Governor has
recently formed to help promote business between Utah and Silicon Valley. While at Phonex, Gov. Leavitt viewed a
demonstration of Phonex Corporation's entire offering of Power Line Carrier (PLC) products, and interviewed the company's
chief officers and engineers. After learning how Phonex products convert any electrical outlet into a telephone jack,
the Governor remarked on the impressiveness of the technology and showed particular interest in Phonex's high-speed home
networking prototype. When it was explained that consumers will soon be able to plug the home networking device into an
electrical outlet and connect all computer and electronic equipment to a high-speed home network the Governor quipped,
"When can I buy one? I want to be customer '001' for this product."
The Governor also expressed pleasure and surprise upon learning that Phonex Corporation is the world leader of Power Line
Carrier (PLC) voice and data communications, saying "I am very impressed to find that a company based right here in the
Salt Lake area has command of such a vital market." President and CEO of Phonex, John Knab, explained the reasons for the
company's position as world leader in PLC technology: "What has driven the kind of growth we're experiencing is the simple
and affordable way Phonex products solve connection problems within the home by transmitting voice and data signals over
standard electrical wiring," said Knab. "We have found that telecommunications and entertainment giants are very skilled
at bringing their technology right to the consumer's door, but do not necessarily understand how to easily connect that
technology within the home. The biggest challenge of many of our customers who sell great technology products is dealing
with wiring issues during installation," explained Knab. "The global attention Phonex is receiving can be attributed to
the number of ways that Phonex products are being used to connect the latest converging technologies for such
manufacturing partners as ReplayTV, Qwest, RCA, Thomson Consumer Electronics, Radio Shack, AT&T, and GE."
Further probing for information on the power of Phonex Corporation's soon-to-be-released home networking product, Gov.
Leavitt asked, "will Phonex someday be able to offer voice and data transmissions as high as 100 Mbps?" In response
Knab stated, "absolutely, and you'll be able to buy that technology at any mass merchandiser." In speaking to Phonex
Broadband employees, Gov. Leavitt stated that Phonex exemplifies the kinds of technology in Utah that will produce the
strongest alliances with Silicon Valley companies that share the same progressive vision for the future.
