Midvale, UT - 04.10.2000 - Phonex Corporation, the Utah-based world leader of
Power Line Carrier (PLC) voice and data communication devices, announced today that it has reached a major milestone by
shipping more than 2.5 million Wireless Modem Jack™ and Wireless Phone Jack™ systems to homes throughout the U.S. The
proliferation of applications in the home requiring connection to a telephone outlet has been fueling the surge in
Wireless Modem and Phone Jack installations, and is expected to swell the number of units shipped by mid 2000 to three
million. The company, which announced in 1997 that it had shipped one million Wireless Phone Jack units, will come close
to tripling that figure within a three year period. In addition to the number of U.S. households installed, Europe is
now using the Wireless Modem Jack and Phone Jack technologies as well, with recent product introductions in Great Britain
and Italy.
"Phonex Corporation has literally tripled its shipping volume within three years, clearly making Phonex the world leader
in voice and data installations over power lines in the home," said John Knab, president and CEO of Phonex Corporation.
"What has driven this kind of volume is the convergence of a wide variety of technologies within the home, all of which
need a telephone connection. Homes worldwide simply do not have enough phone outlets to support all the new devices
coming to them. Phonex wireless phone jack products can provide any number of phone outlets to any number of locations
throughout a home, solving the problem simply and affordably."
The growth in shipping volume for wireless phone jack products over the last three years can also be attributed to the
number of ways that Phonex products are being used to connect the latest technologies within the home. Such technologies
include interactive TV and set-top box applications for cable and satellite TV. "Many of our OEM customers' biggest
challenge is dealing with the wiring infrastructure within the home during installation of their technology offerings,"
explained Knab. "Although the price and demand for their new products are good, the number of installation hours required
to get each subscriber up and running is significant and costly, making the actual installation process the Achilles heel
for many of these manufacturers. Phonex has established a number of relationships with OEMs to offer alternative
installation options that reduce the time required to install the latest technology products in the homes," Knab said.
Using patented technology, Phonex Corporation's wireless phone jack products are carrier current phone extension systems
which turn any electrical outlet into a telephone jack, transmitting voice and data signals on 110-volt power lines. These
products support up to V.90 modem speeds and can be plugged into any AC outlet, providing an instant telephone jack for
distribution of all phone, fax, and modem signals to any location within a home or small office. Phonex Corporation wireless
phone jack products provide instant connectivity with ìno new wires,î and eliminate the costly installation of hardwired
telephone outlets in difficult, if not impossible environments.
While Phonex dominates the market with high quality voice and V.90 modem speed data transmission over power lines, the
company is also moving aggressively into the broadband home networking market with plans to offer high-speed power line
connections in the home for video, audio, and the Internet by the end of 2000.
The Wireless Modem Jack and Wireless Phone Jack are available under the RCA, GE, Radio Shack, and AT&T Cable Services
name brands within the U.S., and under the Thomson and Adelphia name brands in Great Britain and Italy.
